Our history

When we began developing our question database in 2011, our goal was to enhance the quality of flight training materials for private pilots in Europe. As flight instructors, we found existing literature to be insufficient and narrowly focused. Our students faced significant challenges with their theory lessons and exams, which was a source of frustration for us.

We envisioned creating a comprehensive yet user-friendly question database to address the gaps left by traditional textbooks. Our approach was to provide not just correct answers, but also in-depth explanations, aiming to deliver a powerful learning tool that would prepare students for their exams and their future careers as pilots.

The result was the Pilot QDB. Since its launch, we could not have anticipated that it would be downloaded nearly 50,000 times and help over 5,000 students pass their exams and excel as pilots. It is immensely rewarding to see our hard work make a meaningful impact.

In 2020, we took our next major step by releasing the Helipilot QDB, further advancing our mission to improve European theory materials. We continue to refine and expand our databases, adapting to rule changes, new learning objectives, and advancements in propulsion techniques. The digital nature of our apps allows for instant updates, avoiding the costs and delays associated with printed materials. This ensures that students always have access to the most current information.

Our Core Philosophy: Theory Can Be Engaging and Fun
Our experience as aviation trainers has reinforced two fundamental principles: becoming a pilot is both a commitment and a responsibility. Teaching and learning essential knowledge is a shared responsibility between instructor and student. To achieve this, everyone involved must have access to tools that foster a positive learning experience.

We believe that the theoretical aspect of pilot training, whether private or commercial, is crucial to becoming a proficient pilot. While students are eager to fly, we are committed to making theory interactive, relevant, and enjoyable. We are confident that theory can be both exciting and a valuable complement to practical flight lessons.

We hope our apps, combined with the literature available in Europe, will serve as a potent and valuable resource for all European private pilots.

We aim high and hope our students will do the same! Good luck with your flight training!

Who are we?

Alexander Wiklund – alex@aviationtheory.eu

Alex began his aviation journey over fifteen years ago at the Swedish Upper Secondary School of Aviation in Arvidsjaur, Lapland. After graduating, he committed himself to flight instruction, working full-time as an aviation trainer across various companies and roles from 2008 to 2014. He has extensive experience training pilots at all levels, including PPL, CPL, and ATPL, and has also served as a flight instructor trainer. Currently, Alex works as a First Officer for the Swedish Air Ambulance, flying the PC24. He resides in Umeå with his wife Linnea and their daughter Ebba.

Martin Trankell – martin@aviationtheory.eu

Martin began his aviation journey by exploring soaring a few years into this millennium, soon transitioning to powered flight and commercial pilot training. With nearly twenty years of experience, he has worked as an airline captain, flight instructor, and aviation author. Currently, Martin focuses full-time on aviation projects for major aviation companies and retailers. He has authored two books, Air Law and VFR Radiocommunications, available in both English and Swedish for PPL and LAPL students. Additionally, he has contributed to several digitalization projects aimed at enhancing aviation training materials. Martin resides in northern Stockholm with his wife Maria and their son Theodor.
